How to Work With the Clinic

Qualifications for Interns

Yorkville University Approved

Supervision

Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying)

Registered Psychotherapists are regulated practitioners in psychotherapy in good standing with their respective colleges: The College of Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). In Ontario, therapists registered with the CRPO use the title or designation of Registered Psychotherapist and have the abbreviation RP after their name. Qualifying refers to the progress of completing a certain number of hours per the CRPO requirements.

Psychotherapy is primarily talk-based therapy to help people improve and maintain their mental health and well-being. Registered Psychotherapists work with individuals and couples in individual settings. Psychotherapy occurs when the RP or RP (Qualifying) and the client enter into a psychotherapeutic relationship where both work together to bring about positive change in the client’s thinking, feeling, behaviour and social functioning. Individuals usually seek psychotherapy when they have thoughts, feelings, moods and behaviours that adversely affect their day-to-day lives, relationships and ability to enjoy life.

Intern Students

The CRPO requires that interns seeking registration with the CRPO are supervised by a Clinical Supervisor registered with the CRPO during their internship. If you are applying from Yorkville University, please ensure you have matched with a supervisor that is accepted by both the CRPO and the College's requirements. For example, an RCC would not suffice for Yorkville or CRPO's requirements for clinical supervision.

Successful applicants will be fully integrated into the clinic. This includes:

  • Full access and personal profile on our clinic Jane App account

  • Personal profile on our website/advertisements

  • Personal Resources to carry throughout practice

  • Full orientation to Synergetic Healing Psychotherapy

  • Training in the use of JaneApp

YU expects that MACP students will be provided with the following:

  • full orientation of the site and its policies and procedures

  • safe and healthy work environment

  • private meeting space (and/or appropriate online counselling platforms) in which to provide face-to-face counselling with clients

  • guidance and information related to providing tele-mental health counselling, including but not limited to the site’s technological and ethical protocols

  • adequate workspace for completing progress notes, reports, and other related activities

  • appropriate storage space for all client files.

Supervision

Many agencies in the field that take on interns provide free supervision, and we encourage anyone to consider that option; typically, they do so as the supervisor is salaried.

Supervision is externally offered with CRPO qualified supervisors and these are only available as a fee-for-supervision service. Each of their rates is tailored per hour. This fee, in its entirety, goes directly to the supervisors, and the clinic does not receive it.

If wishing to connect with a supervisor, we would connect you to one to schedule an interview to see if you are a good fit together. Once you two have found a good match, we will complete paperwork between the clinical director, supervisor and student therapist to establish boundaries and expectations.

However, the support of connecting you to a practicum supervisor is not limit you. Supervision must be taken seriously and tailored to the areas you wish to learn more about. We encourage you to find a supervisor that is a good fit regarding the modalities being used as well as being well-educated on the populations you plan on working with. When looking for an external supervisor, please educate yourself on the province's regulated bodies, such as the CRPO. Please ensure that while interviewing supervisors, you carefully filter with Yorkville's, CRPO's, and SHP's policies.
